Hierarchies of mixedness: hybridity, mixed-race racisms and belonging for Eurasians in Singapore

As a mixed yet bounded racial category, Eurasian identity in Singapore presents key case exploring mixed-race racisms and hierarchies based around class, race migration. Racial categorizations postcolonial draw heavily on colonial hierarchies, the shifting boundaries Eurasianness illustrate performative nature of identities, politics being recognized/misrecognized as mixed, not-mixed, or “other” within racialized state framework. Drawing 30 life-story interviews with individuals who self-identify Eurasian, this paper examines identities mixedness explores valuations placed different heritages types mixing order to out experiences mixed- intra-race racialization for community. The limits performance (mixed) are key, seen juxtapositions between race, phenotype, inflected by performed heritage, socio-economic status state-sanctioned cultural markers.
